What happens if youve killed the lonesome drifter for the mysterious magnum before initiating "talent pool"?

Fallout new vegas quest "talent pool" , recieved at the tops casino. I killed his *** the second i saw him for the mysterious magnum, then lo and behold, he was a requisite for a quest. but idont think i recieved a notification of failure. so what happens?
